A new generation is emerging to fill the gaps in a nation where issues related to environmental, animal, and human health frequently overlap in intricate and disregarded ways. An important milestone in Bangladesh's youth-led interdisciplinary health advocacy was reached during the 2nd National One Health Youth Symposium, which took place at Khulna University on May 23–24, 2025.

The two-day event, which was organized jointly by the Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) and Khulna Agricultural University (KAU) chapters of the International Veterinary Students' Association (IVSA), was more than just a symposium, it was the realization of a daring, scalable model for youth-led One Health action and AMR stewardship.

From Idea to Action: The Beginnings of a Youth-Led Framework

This movement began in 2023 when Abu Sayed, a dedicated DVM student at PSTU, recognized the need to address significant policy and academic gaps in One Health awareness among the youth in Bangladesh. In response, he took the initiatives to organize the first National One Health Youth Symposium in Bangladesh (1st NOHYSB). Despite limited funding, the inaugural event was held with unwavering determination and was supported by the Food and Agriculture Youth Institute (FAYI) of IAAS (International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences). This landmark initiative planted the seeds for something much greater.

Following the huge responses from the participants, the 2nd NOHYSB was planned and organized on 23-24th May, 2025 at Khulna University. Veterinary medicine, public health, microbiology, environmental science, fisheries, biotechnology, and agricultural sciences were among the 13 diverse disciplines represented by the more than 160 chosen delegates from more than 10 public and private universities who came together to put knowledge into action.

The primary objective was to encourage  undergraduates and early-career professionals to embrace the One Health approach,which acknowledges the interdependence of environmental, animal, and human health and the need to address them collectively.

A Meeting Point of Advocacy, Science and Skills

Academic leaders and technical experts—such as Prof. Nitish C. Debnath, National Coordinator of One Health Bangladesh—delivered keynote addresses during the high-profile opening ceremony of the symposium. Their insights provided both local and global perspectives on how Bangladesh can leverage the One Health approach to tackle urgent challenges such as the silent pandemic of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), zoonotic diseases, and climate-sensitive illnesses.

A notable example of field-based success shared at the event was the practice of AMR-free poultry farming in Barishal. The symposium featured over 12 scientific sessions, covering topics in AMR control and the integration of environmental science into One Health frameworks. These sessions were rich in case studies, policy insights, and urgent calls to action, bridging theoretical knowledge with practical solutions.

In parallel, 8 interactive workshops were held, including:

·      Scientific Paper Writing & Publication (led by Dr. Abu Sayed)

·      Career Development in One Health including public sector jobs, higher studies, and NGO work.

·      Leadership Skills and AI in Research

·      Hands-on presentation training with Canva

·      Antimicrobial stewardship practices in private hospitals.

This skill building segment ensured that students left not only informed but prepared to act.

A Platform for Everyone: Interdisciplinary and Inclusive

What made this symposium truly unique was its inclusive and multi-sectoral nature. Participants included young farmers, researchers, environmentalists, pharmacy and biotechnology experts, policy influencers, as well as veterinary and medical students. A diverse range of partners contributed to the event, including government agencies such as the Field Disease Investigation Laboratory (FDIL) and the Department of Livestock Services (DLS); UN agencies like WOAH and leading private sector organizations such as ACME, Paragon Group, and Square Pharmaceuticals PLC (AgroVet). Academic institutions from across the country, including medical colleges and universities, were also actively involved.

The event became a true microcosm of Bangladesh’s One Health ecosystem—demonstrating unprecedented collaboration among government bodies, NGOs, academia, and the private sector.

Toward a Sustainable Future: Vision Beyond the Event:

This symposium is now developing into a long-term movement rather than merely an annual event. Under the direction of IVSA PSTU and KAU, the organizing team is attempting to establish National One Health Youth Symposium in Bangladesh (NOHYSB) Founding Committee, a sustainable approach that will assist in continuing the journei with young people nationwide.

In additionally, the organizing committe is moving forward with the plan to organize the 1st National Youth Consultation on AMR, engaging Quardipartite Forum (FAO, WHO, WOAH, and UNEP). Bangladesh would then be positioned as a regional leader in the governance of AMR led by young people.

As shared in their roadmap, the goals ahead include:

·      Integrating One Health into academic curriculum.

·      Taking AMR awareness campaigns to rural farming communities.

·      Training students in policy advocacy and science communication.

·      Building a strong talent pipeline for national and global health leadership.

Impact That Resonates

Direct beneficiaries include:

1.     Students and early-career professionals, now acknowledged the important prospcects of AMR, One Health leadership, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

2.     Farming communities, especially those inspired by success stories like the Model Poultry Village led by Md. Shawon Sarder in Barishal.

3.     Policy institutions, gaining access to a motivated youth network for future public health initiatives.

4.     Research institutions, where new One Health research partnerships are already being explored.

5.     Private organizations and UN agencies, who now have a skilled pool of youth to involve in health and sustainability initiatives.

A New Generation Takes the Torch

The auditorium was filled with hope and determination as the event came to a close with a joyous prize-giving ceremony. The One Health Youth Symposium was evidently a catalyst rather than merely a conference.

These young people have taken it upon themselves to study, teach, and lead in a country where One Health is still not included in official curricula. Their combined voice is changing Bangladesh's health narrative in a way that uses empathy, data, and education to bridge the gaps between species, systems, and solutions.

The 2nd National One Health Youth Symposium did not end with the final session,it ignited a movement and that movement is here to stay.

The founder, Dr. Abu Sayed, stated, "We're not just holding events, we are raising a generation that views environmental, animal, and human health as one linked thread. The youth of Bangladesh is rising not only for themselves but for a more united and healthy world."
